A drawing of a river with boats, one of which is being pushed out from shallow water in the foreground. A tree grows from a rocky outcrop on the left, and mountains loom in the distance. Signed and dated, lower left: HS [in monogram] / 1677. Herman Saftleven made many landscape drawings of the countryside around his home city of Utrecht and along the Rhine.This is one of a series of landscapes executed in 1677, which are loosely based on the scenery along the Rhine.

Abraham van Broyel sale, Amsterdam, 30 October 1759, lot D184 where attributed to Herman Saftleven, 'een ditto Rhyn-gezicht, in de zelfde manier geteekend, niet minder dan het voorige en van ditto groote'; bought by Pieter Yver (fl.98 with lot D183); probably acquired by George III; in the Royal Collection by c.1810; transferred from Buckingham Palace in 1950 (V.R. Inventory no. 885)
