Pen and ink, with grey wash, over free and ruled pencil and pinpointing | 31.4 x 39.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 907514

A drawing of a villa on the outskirts of Padua. The left hand side is a villa and its walled garden. In the foreground, and on the right hand side, is a winding road with a coach travelling along it. Several groups of figures are also on the road. In the background is a view of Padua, including the roof of the Salone. The drawing is enclosed within a ruled ink border line. Canaletto was normally based in Venice, but visited Padua in the early 1740s. This drawing was made during that trip. Canaletto appears to have kept the sheet, or another from the same journey, as he reused the building on the left in a painting he made in England for Lord Chesterfield in around 1750. This painting is now in a British private collection.
