A photograph of a drawing in the Royal Library, Windsor (RCIN 909595) which is a copy after the decoration depicting Diana of Ephesus on the pilaster between the fifth and sixth bays of the Loggia, designed by Raphael and executed by his workshop (c.1517-19) in the Vatican. Annotated on verso.
The drawing reproduced in this photograph is contained within the so-called Vittoria album (RCIN 970359), which comprises a group of drawings which were in the collection of Spanish painter and printmaker Vincenzo Vittoria (1650-1712). Ruland (1876) catalogues this drawing as either having been authored by Giovanni da Udine or copied from him by Pietro Santi Bartoli. Many of the drawings in the Vittoria album are by Pietro Santi Bartoli, though not this particular one.
The repeating sequence of decoration in the Logge - see Dacos 2008 (Bibliographic References) for more information - is strongly influenced by the antique; Raphael had studied antique sculpture and painting in Rome.Provenance
