An etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco The sacrifice of Isaac painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the fourth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with Bible quote in Latin (Genesis 22). Signed with Bartoli's monogram (see Nagler, IV, no.3308) and numbered on plate at lower right: 4. Trimmed within platemark. Published in Imagines veteris ac novi Testamenti in Vaticani Palatii (1675).
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
