-
An engraving reproducing the lunette painted over the window on the south wall of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican, also known as Jurisprudence Wall. Lettered with production details and dedication by Giovanni Volpato to Pope Pius VI (r.1775-99. Numbered in the lower right corner: IX.
Although the engraving bears resemblance to Volpato's series of plates after Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican (see RCINs 852371, 852458), it does not seem to belong to it. See Bibliographic References.
The fresco depicts the personification of three of the four cardinal virtues: Fortitude, Prudence and Temperance (from left to right). The personification of the fourth virtue, Justice, is painted in a roundel on the ceiling of the Stanza.Provenance
