Apollo on Parnassus c.1517-20
Engraving | 35.8 x 46.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852473
-
An engraving after a lost preparatory study (or finished modello) by Raphael for his fresco of the Parnassus, painted in c.1510-11 in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. Lettered at lower centre: RAPHAEL PINXIT IN VATICANO. Signed with the engraver's monogram at lower centre: MAF. With indecipherable mark at lower right.
The stylistic inconsistency of the print has suggested that the plate may have not been entirely engraved by Marcantonio, but completed by an assistant. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.Provenance
