The Virgin and Child c.1853-76
Salted paper print | 22.2 x 17.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850939
-
A photograph of a drawing the composition of which closely resembles that of an engraving attributed to Marcantonio Raimondi (Bartsch XIV, p.60, no.53). The latter is described as a repetition with slight alterations of another engraving also by Raimondi (RCIN 850934), probably after a lost drawing by Raphael related to his painting of the Madonna di Foligno (c.1512) now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City. A photograph of the Madonna di Foligno at RCIN 850930. Ruland (1876) listed the photographed drawing as being then in the possession of H. Vaughan, Esq.
Showing the Virgin sitting on clouds, supporting the Christ Child with her hands under His armpits; the Child looks down while grasping her mantle with both hands.Provenance
