A photograph of painting catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the possession of the Grand Duchess Mary of Russia, Florence. The painting is a copy of Raphael's so-called Madonna di Loreto (c.1511), a painting now in the Musée Condé, Chantilly (inv. no.68; see RCIN 850869).
The composition is known from many painted versions. Ruland thought that the original painting by Raphael either had disappeared or was the one then in the possession of Sir Kennedy Laurie, Florence (now in the Morgan Library and Museum, New York, inv. no.AZ 139).
Showing the Virgin holding a veil over the sleeping Christ Child, with St Joseph standing on the right.Provenance
