Holy Family with the Lamb and the Infant Baptist dated 1613
Engraving | 20.4 x 16.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850781
-
An engraving after a painting catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the Gallery at Kassel (possibly now in the Staatliche Museen Kassel, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister; inv. no.GK 539). The print is dedicated to Duke Albert of Bavaria (most likely identified as Albert VI, the brother of Maximilien I, Duke of Bavaria; see Meyer zur Capellen 1989, p.98).
The composition is based on Raphael’s Holy Family with the Lamb (1507), with a few changes and the addition of the Infant Baptist leaning on a rabbit beneath an elm on the left. See RCIN 850778 for a photograph of the painting.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
