Study for the Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist and St Elizabeth c.1823-1874
Lithograph with tint stone | 32.3 x 28.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850768
-
A lithographic facsimile of a drawing currently attributed to the so-called ‘Calligraphic Forger’ now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.17576). Lettered with production details. See RCIN 850766 for a photograph of the drawing.
Ruland (1876) described the drawing as a study by Raphael for his so-called Canigiani Holy Family (c.1507-08; see RCIN 850756 for a photograph of the painting). It is now generally thought that the drawing is based on a sheet in the Musée Chantilly (see RCIN 850769 for a photograph of it), lacking the figure of St Joseph. See Bibliographic References.
Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child on her knees, who leans forward to the Infant Baptist resting on St Elizabeth’s lap.Provenance
