Engraving | 40.2 x 25.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850758
-
An engraving reproducing (in reverse) the composition of the so-called Canigiani Holy Family, a painting by Raphael (c.1506-07) now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no.WA 476). See RCIN 850756 for a photograph of the painting.
It has been suggested that the engraving may be based on a preparatory drawing for the painting, rather than on the painting itself.
Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child on her knees, who leans forward to the Infant Baptist held by St Elizabeth, with St Joseph standing behind them and supporting himself with a stick; in a landscape with five angels above.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
