A photograph of a sheet featuring two pen and ink studies by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.159). Ruland (1876) connected the drawing with Raphael’s so-called Madonna del Cardellino, a painting (c.1506 now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv.1890, no.1447). A photograph of the painting can be found at RCIN 850698.
On the left, the Virgin is seated holding the Child on her lap and looking down at the Infant Baptist who stands beside her. At the top right is the seated Virgin holding a book in her right hand, the Child stands between her knees and a summarily indicated Infant Baptist is on the left.Provenance
