A runaway carriage 1 - 1 Nov 1793
Hand-coloured etching | 30.4 x 41.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 810454
-
A hand-coloured print of a runaway carriage pulled by four greys horses. The driver is trying unsuccessfully to control the horses. A dog bounds at the horses' feet. In the background is another carriage. Although the carriages, figures and animals have been etched by Rowlandson, the landscape in this print has been added later in pencil and crudely coloured. Rowlandson made a number of prints for amateur artists to copy and colour, but this is an ordinary satirical print which has been used as a colouring exercise. Inscribed in the plate: Rowlandson / Pub. Nov 1 1793 by SW Fores No 3 Piccadilly
Provenance
Perhaps one of the prints acquired from the descendants of Samuel Fores in 1854
