With the arrival of spring, the allies began a concerted effort to bombard the defences of Sebastopol toward the Russian bastion of the Malakoff tower. From 9 to 18 April the artillery fire was almost incessant, but the Russians repaired their defences every night. In this print the discharge of a gun lights up the sky in a British battery, while the other guns are loaded and prepared for firing.
