A deeply carved and pierced ornament in the form of a pierced column in black ebony of stylised animals and figures.
Carvings of this kind are made by the Makonde people of Madagascar and represent the unity (ujamaa) of the clan or community. The tall, elaborate sculptures often culminate in the figure of the mother or maternal uncle in reference to matrilineal tradition.Provenance
