Full size standing figure of of Diana in flowing drapery, striding forwards, reaching with her right hand for an arrow from the quiver on her back. A cast of the antique Diane de Versailles (Diane a la biche) now in the Louvre, Paris. Cast for Charles I from moulds obtained in France, where the ancient statue had been since 1586.
Provenance
Probably first located at Greenwich Palace, first definitively recorded in the Royal Collection at Whitehall Palace and in the gardens at St. James's Palace by 1633. It was originally accompanied by the stag found in the ancient statue but this may have been destroyed at the time of the fires of 1691 and 1698. Moved to Windsor Castle by George IV, 1829, probably from Hampton Court Palace where many of the garden statuary was moved during the reign of William III.
