This brass shell case, re-worked after use with a repoussé design, is inscribed Ricordo Alti Piani Asiago Cesuna which can be translated as, 'I remember Asiago Plateau, Cesuna'. The Asiago Plateau saw much bloodshed between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians. In May 1917 (the date inscribed on the base of the shell) the Italians launched the tenth Battle of the Isonzo. However, the Austro-Hungarians outperformed the Italians in their defensive strategy, ammunition capability and army training. By the end of the month the Italians had lost more than 128,000 men.
Provenance
Formed part of King George V's War Museum at Windsor Castle, established to display his collection of First World War souvenirs; the King was assisted by the Royal Archivist & Librarian John Fortescue (1859-1933). Many of these objects were loaned to the Imperial War Museum in 1936 at the suggestion of King Edward VIII.
