A self-portrait of Ottavio Leoni 1625
Engraving | 14.0 x 10.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 670000.a
-
An engraved self-portrait of Ottavio Leoni, bust length, turned towards the left; framed in a dodecagon. This print is lettered around the portrait: "Eques Octavi' Leonus Roman' pictor fecit / 1625 / Superiorum permissu". Trimmed to the platemark.
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Illustrious Painters &c:a, the album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its contents sold during the early twentieth century, when only a few of Cassiano's foreign non-royal portrait prints were retained for the collection.

Provenance
From the collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-22 October 1657); inherited by his brother, Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo (1606-1689); sold by Carlo Antonio’s grandson to Clement XI, 1703; acquired by Cardinal Alessandro Albani by 1714, from whom the collection was purchased by George III in 1762.
