An engraving of William Feilding (c.1587–1643), naval officer and courtier, 1st Earl of Denbigh from 1622. He travelled in Persia and India 1631–3 and this print was made before his return to Britain. A half-length portrait, with deep lace collar and slashed doublet, a band over his right shoulder. Oval within Latin inscription and border; English inscription below. This print is lettered around the portrait: "NOBILISS': D'. GUILIELMUS FIELDING, COMES DENBIGH, UICE COMES FIELDING, BAR de NEWENHA"; along the bottom: "The right Honourable WILLIAM Ffielding. Earle / of Denbigh. Vicount Ffielding. and Baron of / Newenham. Ambassador to the high & mighty King of Persiæ. // Will: Webb. excudit. // Ao: 1631.".
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano and his younger brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Heads of English illustrious Personages, the album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and incorporated into the sequences of British portrait prints in the collection.
