George Charles Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan, had been placed in charge of the cavalry division for the Crimean War in early 1854. He and his brigade commanders, Lord Cardigan and Sir James Scarlett, had no experience of war; additionally Lucan and Cardigan hated each other Lucan was married to Cardigan's sister, Lady Anne. Above all, he remains known today for his role in the miscommunication of the military order that led to the 'Charge of the Light Brigade'.Provenance
