A full length bronze figure of Prince Arthur in Indian Army uniform and wearing a flat hat, frogged tunic and a sash with decorations. Facing forward, right leg forward, hands resting on sabre. On circular base.
Prince Arthur, first duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was the third son and seventh of the nine children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Duke of Wellington was godfather at his christening and from an early age Prince Arthur was brought up to fulfill his parents' wishes to lead a successful and thriving career as an army officer.
This is a bronze cast reproduction of a statuette made by Count Gleichen in 1873, at the start of Prince Arthur's army career. He is depicted wearing Indian uniform with his hands resting on the hilt of his sword. This bronze cast must be a later reproduction of the original statuette. It is signed J MOORE for James John Moore, a fomer foreman at Elkington in Birmingham, who in the early 1880's took over a successful foundry in Thames Ditton, outside London, and renamed it Moore & Co.
Count Gleichen began his artistic career after retiring from the British Navy. He became a successful and accomplished sculptor and made several statuettes and bust portraits for Queen Victoria and members of the royal family.Provenance
Possibly commissioned by Queen Victoria.
