Aquatint with etching and hand-colouring of Napoléon I, Emperor of the French. Whole length in profile with a cocked hat, green uniform and white breeches. The Emperor is pictured standing, with hands behind back, with a view of Lockwood in the background. With English inscription below, including publisjer's address, 'Published Septr. 1 1816 at R. Ackermann's, 101 Strand.'
After his surrender, Napoleon was exiled to the remote island of St Helena, where he was under the guard of a British garrison. This print, showing him in military dress, reflects the continued British interest in the fallen Emperor. Napoleon was allowed to retain his military rank during his exile, and continued to wear a general's uniform. The print is based on a sketch made by a British officer on St Helena.Provenance
