Lock and stock Algerian, barrel French c.1780
Iron, silver and gilt, hardwood, coral.
Lock inscribed in Arabic made by 'AMAL MAHMUD, dated 1206 A.H (1791 A.D)
Barrel stamped Merley Carteron, and Crown B?, and originally blued.
Silver stamped with Tughra marks.
This musket formed part of the lavish gift presented to George III by the Dey of Algiers. Other gifts from Algeria included jewelled swords, fire arms, caparisons, saddles, and stirrups.Provenance
Belonged to George III; taken from Augusta Lodge and transferred to George IV's Armoury at Carlton House in 1822.
