Woodcut of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. Head and shoulder length portrait turned right, wearing a flat cap, brocade cloak and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The Latin inscription 'IMPERATOR CAESAR DIVVS MAXI MILIANVS PIVS FELIX AVGVSTVS' has been printed to the left and right of his face. The portrait is surrounded by an ornate frame consisting of carved columns and two large griffin supporting Maximilian's coat of arms. The German inscription 'Der Teur Furst kayser Maximilianus ist auff den xii tag des Jenners seins alters im lix Jar seligklich von dyserz entgeschaiden Anno domini 1519' (The precious Duke and Emperor Maximilianus died on the twelfth day of January in the year of 1519) sits beneath the portrait. The plate has been trimmed.
Discussed in The Illustrated Bartsch, vol. 10 commentary (B.153). The portrait was possibly copied from the first block by Pseudo-Burgkmair, with the architectural frame added by Hans Weiditz. Although this framed version of the portrait was produced c.1518-19, the monogram, crack left from the crest to the beret and the fading tone in the lower right corner date the print to the mid sixteenth century, c.1550. -
