Hand coloured etching and engraving of Louis the Pious, Holy Roman Emperor. Half length portrait facing right, wearing an embroidered and bejewelled blue mantle and crown while holding a sceptre and sword. The circular portrait sits within a square frame inscribed in German, 'LUDWIG D. FROMME.' The print has been taken from a book titled Die Deutschen Kaiser, published by S. Schmerber c.1844-47. The book is illustrated by printed portraits of Holy Roman Emperors, all after painted portraits completed in the nineteenth-century and hung in Frankfurt's Kaisersaal, a room of the City Hall once used for the coronation of Holy Roman Emperors. The plate has been trimmed.
