Engraving with etching of William II, Prince of Orange. Bust length as a young boy, with long hair, plumed hat, lace collar, breast plate, and embroidered doublet. Within an oval border of weapons, armour, and putti and with Latin inscription below. For a corresponding print of Mary, Princess Royal, see RCIN 602080. One of a series of ten prints of the Princes of Nassau and their wives, after drawing by Soutman after Gerrit van Honthorst, with the portraits engraved by Jonas Suyderhoef and Pieter van Sompel, and with the borders etched by Pieter Soutman, published in 1643.
In 1641 Frederick Henry's 14 year old son, later William II, Prince of Orange (1626–50) was married to Charles I's daughter Mary Stuart (1631–60) aged just nine. This print was engraved after a portrait by Gerrit van Honthorst which remains in the Royal Collection today. It may have been commissioned by Charles I, or presented as a diplomatic gift from Fredrick Henry to celebrate the marriage. The union between William and Mary proved a successful one, and in later years the Prince and Princess of Orange arranged for their own son, William III, to be married to a Stuart Princess, Mary II.
