A print of Prince James Francis Edward Stuart, son of King James II, who claimed the British throne as James III. His rival court, based in Paris, agitated against Hanoverian rule and launched a number of risings to unseat George I and George II. Prints such as this, which describes the Prince as ‘King of Great Britain’ were circulated throughout Europe, and were purchased by British supporters of the Jacobite cause.
Provenance
Perhaps the impression purchased by the Prince of Wales in 1807 (see Edward Corp, 'The Stuart Court in Rome. The Legacy of Exile, 2007, p. 166)
