Hybrid paste porcelain circular tureen, cover and stand. Domed cover with a gilded pineapple and serated foliate finial, scrolled gilded handles. Brown ground and gilded rims; the tureen and cover painted with dragons in a stylised garden setting; the stand with Ho-Ho birds on blossoming branches with a star shape central reserve. The order for this dinner service is recorded on 31 July 1816 at a cost of £2,539.1s.0d., a very high sum indeed. This is one of the six 'soup tureens richly gilt' supplied at £24 each.
Provenance
Part of the Harlequin Service, commissioned by George IV when Prince of Wales, 1807. Part delivered in 1811 and finally in October 1816. The total order invoiced at more than £4,000.
