Soft-paste Sèvres porcelain seaux ovale à verre. Beau bleu ground decorated with tooled gilt foliate scrolls, floral wreaths, trails and crossed branches, two oval reserves painted with scenes from classical Greek and Roman history and mythology.
Provenance
Commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783 & scheduled to take 23 years to complete; only about half was finished by the time of the King's execution in 1793; purchased by George IV from Mr. Würtz of Paris in 1811 for £1,973 4s 8d, through Robert Fogg.
