Gilded wood, glass | 104.9 x 116 x 65 cm (whole object) | RCIN 515
-
Rectangular pair of carved and gilded display cases. Sloping glazed and hinged top. The frieze is decorated in a repeating foliate pattern with baskets of fruit at the corners. Legs carved as winged femal herms; four curved stretchers conjoining as a pair of eagles; gadrooned pad feet. Probably delivered as a pair of marble top tables; later reconstruction to include the glazed cases.
Provenance
William Gates succeeded John Bradburn as tradesman to the Great Wardrobe in 1777. In 1776-7 George III had ordered the construction of a new wing on the north side of Buckingham House which included a separate apartment for the young Prince of Wales (later George IV) for which these tables may form part of a group of the furnishings supplied in 1780.
