A large silver gilt tankard with hinged lid, beaded scroll handle and stepped circular foot. The tankard is cast with a battle scene in relief; the lid inset with a medallion bearing on the obverse John Sobieski on horseback, in relief; the reverse with a profile of Charles II.
Provenance
The battle scene depicts John Sobieski, King of Poland, relieving Vienna from the Turks in 1683. This tankard is an exact copy of a version dating from that year, acquired by George IV. This piece was also bought by George IV when Prince Regent, in 1812, for £192 3s 6d.
