John Gully was a landscape painter from England who settled in New Zealand in 1852, where he became a successful artist. He first worked as a drawing master at Nelson College and then for the provincial Survey Office. Te Papa Museum in Wellington hold a significant group of his works. This watercolour was owned by Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who was the first member of the royal family to visit New Zealand in 1869.Provenance
