Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
Windsor Castle from the west signed and dated 1802
31.0 x 46.0 cm (sight) | RCIN 452645
-
A bodycolour drawing, laid on panel, of Windsor Castle seen from the west. A large tree on the left, cattle and horses in the fields in the foreground, and a couple conversing at a fence. Inscribed on the back of the panel, 'Windsor Castle from the West. Paul Sandby RA 1802', and a Colnaghi label and an auction indication, apparently July 3/72 [N]o 56 or 50.
The view is the same as RCIN 914602 by Thomas Sandby. A bodycolour copy of a similar view by Prince Ernest Augustus is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 980368) and is possibly evidence that an earlier derivation of this composition was used as a model in one of Sandby's drawing lessons to the young prince. -
