The Queen commissioned Marochetti to create the effigy of the Prince for the Mausoleum at Frogmore, although she left her eldest daughter, Victoria, now The Crown Princess of Prussia, chiefly in charge of its design. The work, shown here in a reduced reproduction, depicts the Prince swathed in his Garter robes and as if asleep. ‘It has a sweetness and calmness, happiness and repose,’ the Princess wrote to her mother, ‘which, while they cause one's tears to flow, make one feel soothed and comforted.’ Text from Victoria & Albert: Art & Love.
