Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
Windsor Castle from Eton Bank signed and dated 1801
Bodycolour | 53.1 x 77.2 cm (sight) | RCIN 451608
-
A bodycolour of the north front of Windsor Castle, seen from across the River Thames. The river on the left and its bank on the right with three trees. A man is fishing at the centre, two horses on the right. On the river is the Royal Barge, and other boats. In the middle ground, the King's Engine House and wooden bridge, with horses and carts. A pen and wash drawing in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914617) of the same view was used by Sandby as the model for an aquatint of Windsor from Eton published in 1777 (for example, British Museum 1904,0819.757). It was probably also the preparatory study for this work, a similar view in bodycolour that was bequeathed to the Royal Academy by William Sandby, and two other watercolours in the Royal Collection (RCINs 452655 and 452398). Sandby did not often sign and date his works.
