Prince Albert's father, the Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, is shown wearing Austrian military uniform with the star of the Order of the Black Eagle. Haslem's enamel is signed, dated and inscribed on the counter-enamel in black paint: 'Ernest Duke of Saxe Coburg Saalfeld / b. 1784 d. 1844 / J. Haslem 1848.' An inscription on the front of the frame indicates that Haslem's enamel copy is after Carl Ruprecht and gives the date of the image as 1802. Richard Redgrave's inventory , which lists the enamel hanging in the Prince Consort's Writing Room in Buckingham Palace, describes the source as 'a crayon drawing by Ruprecht' and dates it to 1812. Carl Ruprecht was a pastellist and miniature painter working in Coburg during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. His pastel remains untraced.
