Guglielmo Faija's miniature is a head and shoulders copy taken from Sir William Ross's full-length watercolour double portrait of the Princess with Princess Helena painted in March 1848 (913822: Royal Collection).
Princess Clotilde was the third child and eldest daughter of Prince Augustus of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Clémentine, princesse d'Orléans. She married, in 1864, Archduke Joseph of Austria (1833-1905) with whom she had two sons and five daughtersProvenance
