Frederick (1769-1829) is wearing the uniform of Colonel of the 4th regiment of Hussars with the ribbon and cross of the order of Maria Theresa, the crosses of Alexander Nevski and the Red Eagle, the blue ribbon of St Andrew, the medal of St George (of Russia), the chain of St Stephen (Hungary) the stars of St Andrew and St Stephen, and two others. In 1818, he married Princess Elizabeth, daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte. He succeeded his father as Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg in 1820 and Elizabeth’s dowry was used to service the considerable debts he inherited on his succession.
Caspar Gerhard Klotz (1774-1847) was born in Mannheim. He was the son of the painter Mathias Klotz and the brother of the painters Joseph and Simon Klotz. He worked in Munich and became court painter to Elector Charles Theodor in 1794. In 1803, he was in Paris, then in Vienna and other German and Austrian cities. From about1812-17 he lived in Frankfurt on Maine until his death in 1847 in Munich.
