Heinrich Abel Seijffert (1768-1834) was a painter of portraits in oils and pastel, and also a miniaturist, who worked at the courts of Berlin and Schwerin, exhibiting at the Berlin Academy from 1793. This late work by Seijffert is based on a full-scale oil portrait by Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow (1788 – 1862), destroyed during the Second World War but formerly at Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin. Dating from c.1828, the miniature depicts Augusta, daughter of Count Ferdinand von Harrach and his first wife, Johanna von Rayski, several years after her morganatic marriage, in 1824, to Frederick William III, King of Prussia. She was created Princess of Liegnitz and Countess of Hohenzollern on her marriage. Queen Victoria, to whom she was presented at Osborne House whilst staying at Ryde on the Isle of Wight, found her 'very amiable and much liked by the family' (RA QVJ: 7 August 1850). She died childless at Homburg in 1873.
