This is one of a series of seven miniatures which depict Frederick III, King of Denmark, his consort Sophia Amalia, and four of their six children. Three of the miniatures, including the present one, are inscribed with the date 1676, which may be the year in which the whole series was painted by an unidentified Danish artist. The miniatures were first recorded in the Royal Collection in Queen Caroline's Closet at Kensington Palace. Several of the miniatures in this group are dependant on large-scale oil portraits; no such source has yet been identified in the present case, which shows Frederica Amalia as the goddess Diana with bow and quiver, holding an arrow in her left hand. Frederica Amalia, second daughter and third child of Frederick III, King of Denmark, married in 1667, Christian Albrecht, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. Inscribed on the gessoed back in ink: 'No 40 La Princesse Frideric Amalie Duchess de Holstein Gottdorf 1676'
