This is one of a series of seven miniatures which depict Frederick III, King of Denmark, his consort Sophia Amalia, and four of their six children. Three of the miniatures are inscribed with the date 1676, which may be the year in which the whole series was painted by an unidentified Danish artist. The miniatures were first recorded in the Royal Collection in Queen Caroline's Closet at Kensington Palace.
Sophia Amalia is depicted at half-length holding a fan in her right hand, and with a green parrot perched on her left. The miniature is copied from a painting formerly at Schloss Marienburg; a version is in the Bomann Museum, Celle.
Sophia Amalia, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg, married, in 1643, Frederick III, King of Denmark.
Inscribed on the gessoed back: No 36 Sophie Amalie Reine de Dannemarck nee Duchesse de Broun: et de Luneb.Provenance
First recorded in Queen Caroline's Closet at Kensington Palace by George Vertue in 1743
