Frederick , Duke of York, is depicted wearing the uniform of a colonel in the Coldstream Guards and the star of the Order of the Garter. The miniature was probably adapted from the portrait by Sir William Beechey engraved in mezzotint by Charles Turner in 1812. It is a smaller version of another miniature in the Royal Collection (RCIN 420209). The locket contains a plait of brown hair.
William Marshall Craig (active 1787-1827), the artist, is thought to have been the brother of James Craig, an Edinburgh architect. He exhibited in Liverpool in 1787 and worked in Manchester from around 1791 onwards. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1788 and1827 and at the Associated Artists in Watercolours from 1808 to 1812. Craig was drawing master to Princess Charlotte of Wales, was appointed painter in watercolour to Queen Charlotte in 1812 and miniature painter to the Duke and Duchess of York in 1815. He painted miniatures, portraits, landscapes, figure subjects in oil as well as watercolour, drawings and book illustrations.
