After a three-quarter-length portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter dating from 1849, formerly in the collections of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, and his daughter, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. The Duchess's daughter, Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, stood as sponsor to Prince Leopold at his christening.
Princess Augusta was the daughter of Frederick Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel-Rumpenheimm, and Caroline, Princess of Nassau-Usingen. She married in 1818 Adoplphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge, the youngest son of George III and Queen Charlotte. She was accorded great affection and respect by Queen Victoria 'as the last of her generation' and on her news of her death on 6 April 1889 the Queen wrote: 'I have no longer anyone above me' (Royal Archives, Queen Victoria's Journal: 6 April 1889).Provenance
