This tazza was presented to Prince Albert by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, at Schloss Augustusburg near Brühl during the royal visit to Germany in August 1845.
The neoclassical designs of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), long resident in Rome, were widely reproduced across Europe. His Night with her children Sleep and Death began as a marble relief, with a companion, Day. Only two examples of this model were made by the Berlin factory.
