Still Life c. 1921-23
Oil on panel? | RCIN 408562
-
There are 35 paintings by 20 different artists hanging on the walls of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. This still life, of quite elongated horizontal proportions, is the only decoration in the otherwise utilitarian Linen Room. It was painted by Lady Patricia Ramsay, George V’s cousin, who was a keen artist. She most commonly painted studies of nature, still life arrangements and flowers. The precise rendering of vases and pots on this small scale is impressive. The white drapery backdrop might subtly echo the function of the Linen Room. Ramsay contributed a similar composition to the portfolios in the Dolls’ House Library (926909), as well as two paintings of classical ruins in the Saloon.
