The painter and printmaker Marjorie May Macbeth-Raeburn (born Marjorie May Bacon) studied at Great Yarmouth Art School from 1914-23, winning a scholarship in 1917 and in 1921 passing the Board of Education's drawing examinations at the earliest possible age. She also studied at the Royal College of Art, obtaining her diploma A.R.C.A. in 1927. In 1936 she married the artist and widower Henry Macbeth-Raeburn (1860-1947); the older artist had been her tutor for a number of years, and she had also worked as his assistant engraver. After their marriage, the couple moved to Great Yarmouth. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and New English Art Club and was later a member of the Ipswich Art Club.
This painting depicts Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, aged about ten and six, riding grey horses in a woodland glade.
