George Housman Thomas (1824-68)
The Marriage of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, 10 March 1863 Before 2 May 1864
-
The marriage of the Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and Princess Alexandra of Denmark, took place in St George's Chapel, Windsor. Thomas was commissioned to paint the picture 'of which copies shall be published in chromo-lithography, by the eminent firm of Messrs. Day', according to the Art Journal. The artist has recorded a later moment in the ceremony than William Powell Frith (RCIN 404545). The bride and groom have turned at the altar and are about to move in procession down the Chapel. Queen Victoria can be seen looking down on the ceremony.
In March 1864 Queen Victoria wrote that Thomas's picture 'is as good as poor Mr. Frith's is bad'. In 1869 she acquired it from the estate of Day and Son.Provenance
Painted for Messrs Day & Sons for £1000; purchased by Queen Victoria in 1869; recorded hanging in Windsor Castle in 1879
