Henry VIII (1491-1547) c.1560-80
Oil on panel | 46.9 x 38.8 x 0.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406135

This portrait of Henry VIII is an early derivation of Holbein's original portrait of the King, painted in 1537 on the wall of the Privy Chamber at Whitehall (see RCIN 405750). It was probably painted later in the sixteenth century. The panel seems to have been cut down all round at some point in its history, possibly to enable it to be hung alongside historical portraits on the same scale.
Provenance
Bears the red wax seal of the Capel family; one of a group of paintings acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the King's Dressing Room at Hampton Court in Pyne's Royal Residences of 1819
