The Rape of Europa c.1700
Oil on canvas | 95.8 x 137.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406045
-
Europa, bare-breasted, but wearing a loose classical gown, unsteadily mounts the garlanded bull. She is assisted by one of her handmaidens, while another holds the bull's head. The background is a wooded landscape.
Now in a poor state of preservation, the painting is a gauche imitation of a painting by Veronese in the Anticollegio of the Palazzo Ducale. Its soft handling suggests that it may have been painted as late as c. 1700, and not necessarily in Italy.Provenance
Probably the painting of this subject 'by an Italian hand' listed in the store at Kensington Palace in 1710 (no 123)
