This pair of full lengths (see RCIN 405937) were commissioned by the sitters as a gift to Elizabeth, Countess of Home to be hung at Home House, 20 Portman Square, in frames designed by Robert Adam for which drawings survive (dated May, 1777 in the Soane Museum). The pair were exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1777.
The Duke (George III's brother) is here shown full-length, wearing robes of state with the collar of the Order of the Garter, which he holds in his right hand while holding his coronet in his left hand.Provenance
Bequeathed to William IV, when Duke of Clarence, by the Duchess of Cumberland in her will, dated 15 February 1808; recorded in the Dining Room at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 208)
